Photo credit User:Pajx, Public domain. The Germans wanted flat, empty, and unremarkable, and in 1940 they found all three on the heath west of Karup. There was nothing to demolish and nobody to move - just kilometre after kilometre of low scrub in the middle of Jutland, roughly equidistant from every coast, with a railway line already running past it. What they built there, under the name Einsatzhafen Grove and later Fliegerhorst Grove, outlasted the occupation by eight decades. Today the site is Air Base Karup, the main installation of the Royal Danish Air Force, and a Saab Draken stands on a plinth at the gate. The runways it sits beside are the ones the Luftwaffe laid.
