Denmark's Viking ring fortresses — Trelleborg at Slagelse, Fyrkat at Hobro, Nonnebakken at Odense, Aggersborg on the Limfjord — sit roughly a day's march apart, about fifty kilometres. Lay them out and eastern Zealand has a gap where a fortress ought to be. In 2014, in a ploughed field near Køge, archaeologists went and found one: a circle 145 metres across, third-largest of the Danish ring fortresses, with a rampart ten to eleven metres wide and gates burned to charcoal. The awkward part is that nearly everything else about it is still under argument.
