Dredgers cut it between the Danish island of Lolland and the German island of Fehmarn - some 20 million cubic metres of seabed lifted out, in places 40 metres below the surface - and then left it open, waiting. In the first week of May 2026 the waiting ended. A concrete box 217 metres long, weighing 73,000 tonnes, was floated out of a purpose-built factory at Rødbyhavn, towed into position over three days and lowered into the trench. It is element one of eighty-nine. When the last of them is joined and sealed, the Fehmarn Belt fixed link will be the longest immersed tunnel ever built, and a ferry crossing that currently takes forty-five minutes will take seven by train.
