Frijsenborg: Introduction

Not chapels — parish churches, each with its village and its congregation, spread across roughly 450 square kilometres of eastern Jutland and all of it answering, in one way or another, to the account books at Frijsenborg. King Christian V created the county in April 1672 for a treasury official named Mogens Friis, and for the next two hundred years the Frijs counts were among the largest private landowners in the kingdom. The house they eventually built to match that position stands 27 kilometres north-west of Aarhus near Hammel: red brick banded in pale stone, steepled towers, a moat, and a park where a working farmyard used to be.
