Photo credit CC BY-SA 3.0. Someone tucked a small purse of henbane seeds into her grave. Henbane is poisonous; burned, it produces hallucinations and euphoric states, and whoever buried this woman at Fyrkat around the year 980 clearly meant her to keep it. Beside her lay a metal wand, partly disintegrated, of the kind associated with seeresses. She wore a red and blue dress embroidered with gold thread and silver toe rings otherwise unknown anywhere in the Scandinavian record. Two bronze bowls in her grave had come from Central Asia. A box brooch from the Swedish island of Gotland held owl pellets and small bird bones. She was buried in the richest grave in the cemetery of a fortress that existed for perhaps ten years.
