Sydstenen - the south stone - sits on a low cliff at the tip of Falster, and everything Danish, everything Scandinavian, everything Nordic is behind you when you stand at it. What lies ahead is water, and then Germany. The point is not dramatic in the way a headland ought to be: the cliffs here are five to seven metres of clay and gravel, and the whole place would be unremarkable if it were not the end of something. It is also, on the right morning in spring, one of the great bird spectacles of northern Europe.
