Photo credit CC BY-SA 3.0. "The poor Jews!" a villager said to a Gestapo officer standing in the streets of Gilleleje. The German answered that it was written in the Bible that this should be their fate. "But it is not written," the villager replied, "that it has to happen in Gilleleje." Gilleleje has retold that exchange for eighty years, because the town needs both halves of it: the defiance, and the fact that it happened here anyway. This is a fishing village at the northernmost point of Zealand, a place whose whole history turns on what the sea brings and takes. For one week in the autumn of 1943 it was also the shortest way out of occupied Denmark.

Gilleleje: A Name Meaning a Cleft in the Rock
