Photo credit Poul Krogsgård, CC0. The name is a job description. Klit is dune, møller is mills, and around 1600 three watermills stood where a stream ran out of the dunes into the North Sea. The mills are gone and the trade they served collapsed two centuries ago. Yet the same combination that built the place — running water, an open beach, and wind with the whole North Sea behind it — is why a village of about 1,300 people now appears on the international windsurfing calendar under a nickname nobody here chose: Cold Hawaii.
