On the night of 3 February 1825 the North Sea came over the top of a sandbar and did not go back. The bar was the Agger Tange: thirteen kilometres of shifting dune, less than a kilometre wide at the waist, and the only thing tying the district of Thy to the rest of Jutland. By morning there was a channel where the road had been. Denmark had gained a strait and lost an isthmus, and the northern third of Jutland had quietly become an island. It still is.
