A German federal state, two former grand duchies and a whole regional identity take their name from a low oval ring of earth in a field seven kilometres south of the Bay of Wismar. There is no keep here, no gate, no tower, no stone at all. There is a rampart under grass, oaks planted in the 1850s, and a village cemetery. Mecklenburg — the place the name came from — is a shape in the ground.
