Nibe's coat of arms shows three herring. It is an unusually honest piece of civic branding — no lion, no castle, no saint, just the fish that paid for everything. From the 1300s onward the Limfjord ran thick with herring off this stretch of the Himmerland shore, and a settlement grew up to catch, salt and sell them. The town's privileges, its harbour, its merchants and its quarrel with Aalborg all trace back to that single silver animal. And then, over the course of a few decades in the early nineteenth century, the herring stopped coming. By 1828 the fishery had ceased entirely.
