On 29 December 1566 a twenty-year-old Danish nobleman walked out into the dark near Rostock to settle an argument with a sword. He and his third cousin Manderup Parsberg had quarrelled at an engagement party three weeks earlier over which of them was the better mathematician. Tycho Brahe lost the bridge of his nose that night and wore a brass prosthesis for the rest of his life, as analysis of his exhumed remains established in 2012. He also stayed on at the University of Rostock, which by then had been teaching for nearly a century and a half. That is Rostock in one anecdote: a Baltic trading port where the sea paid for the books, and the students were not always the quiet ones.
