Stenbjerg: Introduction

Sometime in the late 1600s, sand blowing in off the dunes drifted across the fields behind Stenbjerg until the soil could no longer be tilled, and the people living there faced a choice between leaving and finding another living. They chose the sea. On this stretch of the Thy coast that meant launching open boats straight off an unprotected beach into the North Sea and — the harder half of the job — bringing them back through the surf onto the same sand. Stenbjerg did that for nearly three centuries.
