Photo credit Hubertus45, CC BY-SA 3.0. In 1825 the Danish geologist Johan Georg Forchhammer gave a name to a thin dark band running through the white chalk of a cliff on eastern Zealand. He called it fiskeler - fish clay - because it held fish scales and teeth and almost nothing else. It was a modest, descriptive name for a modest-looking layer, five to ten centimetres of grey-brown mud pressed between brilliant white above and below. It took another century and a half for anyone to work out what the near-absence of other fossils meant. That band is the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary. Everything below it belongs to a world with non-avian dinosaurs in it. Everything above belongs to ours.
