Photo credit Elgaard, CC BY-SA 4.0. Niels Frederik Peter Willumsen was breaking new ground. Trundholm Mose had been drained, and on 7 September 1902 he was putting a plough through it for the first time, which is how a bronze horse and a gold-faced disc came out of the peat of northwest Zealand after roughly thirty-four centuries in the dark. Nothing else came with it - no grave, no hoard, no pot. Just the horse, the disc, and the wrecked remains of six four-spoked wheels. Willumsen is buried at Højby church a few kilometres away. The thing he turned up is now on the thousand-krone note, in the Danish culture canon, and in room 12 of the National Museum in Copenhagen, and it is probably the single most eloquent object the Nordic Bronze Age left behind.
