There were no drawings. When Jørn Utzon began building at the edge of Hellebæk Forest around 1950, the builders agreed to work from his spoken instructions and nothing else. As the walls rose he kept revising their shape, reworking the house the way a child reworks a sand castle — a method he had picked up during a 1946 visit to Alvar Aalto in Finland. Word travelled. Architects of serious reputation drove north to stand at the site and watch the thing take form. What they had come to see was the first completed building by a man who had won a great many competitions and finished almost nothing.
