Photo credit Jami430, CC BY-SA 4.0. On 14 August 2007 an open oak longship arrived in Dublin. She had no engine, no cabin and no shelter of any kind, and she had come under sail and oar from Denmark. Havhingsten fra Glendalough — the Sea Stallion from Glendalough — was three years old. She had been built plank by plank on a small island in Roskilde Fjord by a museum that treats boatbuilding not as a craft demonstration but as a research method: if you want to know how a Viking ship behaved, the only reliable way to find out is to build one properly and take it to sea.
