      <description><![CDATA[The monks were exiles when they arrived, and they were not fussy about etymology. The place was called Withscuele. Latinized in the abbey's own documents, that became Vitae Scholae — school of life. It was a happy accident of translation, and the community grew into it: for four centuries Vitskøl was known across Denmark for its school. What the monks never grew into was their church. King Valdemar the Great had given them the land with instructions to build the largest church in Scandinavia, and the foundations they laid in 1158 were sized accordingly. Those foundations are still there in the grass. So is the smaller, humbler church they eventually built instead.]]></description>
