Walk to the end of the mole at Nørre Vorupør and you are standing at the point in Denmark furthest from Copenhagen. Leave out the Faroes and Greenland and no other piece of the country puts more distance between itself and the capital. It is a fitting place to stand, because the people here made a habit of not waiting for the capital. On 20 August 1887 the fishermen of Vorupør founded Fiskercompagniet, pooling boats, gear and the proceeds of the catch, and ran the fishery of an entire village as a single shared concern. It is generally credited as the world's first cooperative fishing organisation.
